Minimum space, maximum style: Transform your tiny apartment into a showstopper!

Designing and decorating a compact apartment is an art – one that we have mastered to a tee. With careful planning and lots of creativity, we know how to turn even the smallest house into a stylish and functional home.

That’s why the Homemakers Fair asked DIYgirls to transform a 53sqm blank space into a pop-up apartment for their expo that’s taking place from 24 to 26 March at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, Johannesburg.

We accepted the challenge and will transform a small space into a stunning apartment!

During the entire designing and decorating process, we have one goal in mind: to create a stylish and edgy living space with a bold and cohesive colour palette, uniquely handcrafted accessories, and a variety of rich textures.

Step 1:  Planning

We started by looking at the floor plan and maximising space utilisation, prioritising functionality, and creating specific zones.

In small spaces, every square inch counts, so it's essential to make the most of the floor plan.

We separated the different areas and created zones for different activities with clever furniture placement and area rugs. We also manufactured furniture in the appropriate shape and scale, taking into account the limited space. Oversized furniture can make a small space feel cramped and claustrophobic, while small furniture can look lost in a big room. Round dining tables and TV wall units are great space savers for smaller living areas.

Step 2:  Colour palette

After planning the layout, we chose a bold and cohesive colour palette of black, cream, and bronze. This combination creates a sophisticated and timeless aesthetic that brings an edgy and modern vibe to the apartment. The black colour brings depth, mystery, and a sense of drama, while the creams offset this with softness, warmth, and comfort. The bronzes ooze elegance, luxury, and glamour.

Step 3:  Add texture & pattern

To add interest and depth to our design, we incorporated a variety of textures. This mix gives the space a layered, curated, and luxurious look.

We also created focal points by embracing bold patterns. To avoid creating visual clutter, we balanced the busy with some simpler elements. The result, a space that is in perfect equilibrium.

When working with bold patterns, it's essential to maintain balance. This means, if you have a bold pattern on the walls, you can opt for more subdued furniture and accessories that complement the look.

Step 4:  Add lights

Lighting is another critical element in any interior, and it is no exception in this pop-up apartment. While overhead lighting is absent due to the structure of the stand, we incorporated a combination of handmade task and ambient lighting. This perfectly complements the look and feel while also adding elegance to the space.

Step 5:  Accessorise

Finally, we added accessories and artwork to give the design even more personality and style. We chose unique accessories that not only complement our colour palette and overall design but also tell a story and introduce a lot of visual interest, adding to the drama and sophistication.
